Ryan Herrick is an undergraduate student of Hampshire College in Amherst, Ma. Through the application of his background in geography, architecture, and natural science, he seeks to establish a way of life that lives closer to the earth and its inhabitants.
In 2011, Ryan traveled to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation to build a house made of natural materials for a Lakota family. While he was there, he became intrigued by the question: “How can design alleviate the effects of poverty?” Through his efforts to answer this question, he hopes that his work will be able to serve as a bridge between the Oglala Sioux community and a higher standard of life that acts in accordance with the beliefs, hopes, and dreams of the tribe.
